Earplugs and Monitors for Musicians

Musicians have unique needs when it comes to hearing protection. They need to protect their hearing, but they also need to be able to hear their own instruments clearly, as well as hear other musicians' instruments and voices while performing.

Conventional store-bought earplugs are great at providing hearing protection, but they distort the sound of music. This is because they don’t attenuate the frequencies evenly. They usually attenuate the high pitches more than the low pitches, distorting the music. Most musicians require specialized hearing protection. This means protection across all frequencies with slightly more emphasis on the low-to-mid frequencies. Musicians need an “even” or “flat frequency response” from their earplugs, which will make the music softer, protecting the auditory system, while preserving the quality of the music.

Over-the-Counter vs. Custom Musician's Earplugs

Musician's earplugs come in both custom and non-custom options. Over-the-counter musician earplugs can reduce sound levels by approximately 20 dB, enough to reduce harmful sound without distorting speech or music.

Custom-made musician's earplugs fit perfectly into the ear canal, and deeply, in order to seal within the bony portion of the ear canal. This deep fit reduces occlusion, a hollow or boomy sound in the musician's own voice, that can be experienced with other earplugs.
